Dear Chamber Partners,
As we are all glued to our favorite weather information outlet we can see Hurricane Ian’s track continually changing, but currently taking a more easterly direction with central Florida being impacted with winds and rain.  That being said, I hope everyone is preparing their businesses and ensuring you have the necessary paperwork, insurance policies, important phone numbers, licenses, and any other necessary items you need to ensure the continuance of your business. It looks like we will endure sustained winds and rains, but we know the path can shift as it moves towards Florida.

Pat, Carolina, Cindy and myself have prepared the Chamber as much as possible in anticipation of potential flooding.  We will close the office at 5 p.m. today, Tuesday, September 27.  We will all be working remotely for the rest of the week.  Phones will be directed to my cell if you have any urgent needs to get in touch with us.

Please be safe and watch for downed power lines and trees once the storm has passed.  It has been a few years since we have had the threat of a hurricane, so please take necessary precautions.

Below are some resources and information we have received:
  • Brevard Public Schools have announced official closings for Wednesday and Thursday of this week.  Go to FLDOE.org/storminfo for updates.
  • Tolls have been suspended throughout the state and emergency lanes will likely be opened up on I-75 in the Tampa area I-4 in Central Florida and Alligator Alley to aid with evacuation.
  • Orlando International Airport is closing at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.
  • Once winds reach a sustained speed of 40 mph, FDOT will order the closure of bridges.
  • FDEM has activated the State Assistance Information Line (SAIL) to provide an additional resource for Floridians to receive up-to-date information regarding Hurricane Ian.  Residents and visitors can call this toll-free hotline at 1-800-342-3557
  • Agency for Persons with Disabilities (ADP) sent a statewide message to remind customers to register for the Special Needs Registry if needed.
  • Florida Department of Elder Affairs (DOEA) are preparing to staff special needs shelters and continues preparation coordination calls with the 11 Agencies on Aging and other field staff.
  • Veterans enrolled in VA Health Care in need of routine or urgent care services in the projected path of the storm can contact VA Health Connect, also known as the VISN * Clinical Contact Center at 1-877-741-3400.
  • For accommodations besides shelters, go to Expedia.com/florida to search for available hotel rooms.
  • Gasbuddy.com helps you track hurricane fuel and power availability.
  • Go to FloridaDisaster.org/GetAPlan for assistance on planning for your family, business or special needs.
  • Go to flgov.com for all the updates from every Florida department as it will continually have the most accurate information.
From the Chamber Staff & Board of Directors, we hope everyone remains safe and we will see what assistance may be needed around the State of Florida as the uncertainty of this storm and its intensity looks like it will have a serious impact on west Florida. We hope everyone stays safe!

All the best,

Nancy Peltonen

The United States is truly a diverse nation, with the most immigrants of any country in the world, representing almost every other country. Data from the Pew Research Center puts it in perspective:

  • About 1/5 of the world’s migrants (almost 40 million people) are living in the U.S.
  • The top three countries of origin are Mexico, China and India.
About 45% live in only three states — California, Texas and Florida.
  • Immigrants make up about 13.7% of the U.S. population. And I am one of them, as I was born in Canada. See more>>

The Greater Palm Bay Chamber is a great way to make business connections and get involved with the community. They are a wonderful supportive team that are always willing to help, and the events they put together are much more than networking opportunities, they are always full of great information. I highly recommend the Greater Palm Bay Chamber; you will definitely get much more out of joining, that the cost of admission.
